Tallahassee Marathon Kicks Off Training Season with Special Events

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. —The Tallahassee Marathon and Half Marathon is kicking off training season with a bang this October. As runners begin their months long training of the half and full marathon events, the marathon is working with their partners to present a series of seminars, as well as training and fun runs to help build excitement as the Capital City’s premiere racing event approaches.

On Oct. 4, Capital City Runners will host a talk with owner and coach, Jon Manry, as well as Brady Irwin, a coach with Science of Speed, about how to structure a distance running training plan. This seminar will dive into the nuts and bolts of running long, and what runners can expect as they prepare for this test of their endurance.

On Oct. 11, Capital City Runners will once again host a lecture and demonstration at Winthrop Park with owner and coach, Jon Manry, who will discuss the ins and outs of running on Tallahassee’s hilly terrain. Runners will get to test their skills first hand and learn what it takes to climb up and conquer Florida’s most challenging elevation changes.

On Oct. 17, the Tallahassee Marathon has partnered with Gulf Winds Track Club to celebrate the opening of the Capital Cascades Bridge. Our local road running club is inviting runners and walkers of all ages to take the Rex Cleveland Magic! Mile starting from one of the highest points in Tallahassee and plunging downhill through Myers Park toward The Bridge and then across the newly minted Capital Cascades Crossing and onto the brand new trail at FAMU Way, finishing just before Railroad Square.

This will be the fastest mile course in Tallahassee. The run will offer a great sneak preview of the newly designed second half of the Tallahassee Marathon. The opening of the bridge is allowing for officials to bring half and full marathon runners on the Florida A&M campus for the first time.

More events will be announced soon, with plans for their to be a seminar and even some happy hours each month leading up to the Feb. 5 race. Group training runs for the Tallahassee Marathon will begin on Oct. 16.

“We have designed this lecture series to be beneficial for both beginning and seasoned runners,” said Ely Rosario, race director for the Tallahassee Marathon. “It is important to us that each and every participant can take their race day experience beyond just the event itself. This entire season of talks, training runs and special events will make their finish line moment even more meaningful.”

It’s easy to stay up to date with all the events leading up to race day by connecting with the Tallahassee Marathon on social media, as well as subscribing to the Hill by Hill Newsletter.

The 43rd Tallahassee Marathon and Half Marathon courses span 26.2 miles and 13.1  miles respectively. The race will feature aid stations, chip timing and other conveniences for runners taking on these distances. An expo event will take place on Feb. 5, 2017, and a finish line festival will take place following the race, both hosting vendors, keynote speeches and giveaways.

The race is presented by Gulf Winds Track Club, and benefits the Hang Tough Foundation. Gulf Winds Track Club was founded in 1975. The club hosts a full schedule of races throughout the year on road, track, and trail, from a 50-meter dash to a 50-mile run. Gulf Winds Track Club and its members also support other running and fitness related activities and events in the community.

The Hang Tough Foundation is the charity partner for the 2017 Tallahassee Marathon. Hang Toughs’s mission is to be a physical, mental, and financial reprieve for families with children experiencing illness or special needs. About

Growing up in Colorado you can't help but love the outdoors. Something magical happens with 300 days of sunshine and the Rocky Mountains in your back yard. My athletic endeavors started on the bike, I would get out and ride whenever I could. In 2011 I moved to Oxford, England for work. I missed the sunshine and mountains, but discovered my passion for running. When I moved back to Colorado I started combining cycling and running, so it was only natural that I started competing in triathlons. I took second place at my first sprint, and caught the bug. Today I'm training for my fourth Ironman.
