Auburn, CA – October 3, 2016– The 2016 Ultra Race of Champions (UROC) 100K, held in Auburn California, once again attracted one of the deepest elite fields in the sport with 21 seeded elite runners, while continuing its traditions of remaining open to all runners. The UROC 100K was established six years ago to celebrate the sport by creating an event attracting the best in the sport competing for a $21,500 cash purse. It also offers a 50K and 25K option.
The race, established in 2011 at Wintergreen Resort in Virginia, moved to Vail, Colorado for two years (2013 and 2014) and now to Auburn, California for 2015 and 2016. The Auburn course, with over 11,000 feet of elevation gain, is challenging but does not favor one particular skill and allows runners to fairly measure themselves against each other. The UROC top podium consists of the top five men and five women. Cody Reed (9:00:16) and Camille Herron (9:36:05) took the Champions titles: in the men’s race, Brett Horning (9:30:26), Charlie Ware (9:46:43), Mario Macias (10:08:56) and Andrew Catalano (10:32:44) took second through fifth; in the women’s race, the second through fifth awards went to Sally McRae (11:09:23), Kerrie Wlad (11:39:44), Caroline McKay (13:31:19), Nedis Della Chiesa (14:19:22). Runners of all backgrounds and nationalities crossed the finish line, with the last finisher- Linda Somera-Moore- in 19:40:55. Countries represented included Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, France, Great Britain, Honduras, Canada, Guatemala, Brazil, Dominican Republic and The Russian Federation.
About the race, Camille Herron, the 2015 100 kilometers World Champion and the UROC 2016 Women’s Champion, says: “It was magical for me racing my first trail 100K and becoming part of history! I had goosebumps being out there and becoming one with the elements. I very much appreciated the support by all the volunteers out there as well, especially when things got rough for me after 51 miles. It was amazing to spring back to life and get going again. It was the best feeling finally making it to the finish. I appreciate the all-day journey of ultrarunning and persevering through the highs and lows”.
