Altra Footwear’s Thomas Rivers Puzey Takes First at TransRockies Run

(Logan, UT — August 26, 2016) – Altra’s Endurance Team member, Thomas “Rivers” Puzey, won Colorado’s six-day, 120 mile TransRockies Run trail race. With a total finishing time of 16:11:03, he beat his hometown rival and second place finisher, Caleb Schiff, by 38 minutes. Both natives of Flagstaff, AZ, were neck and neck during the entire six stages of the race, but on the final stage, Puzey pulled ahead to take the lead and grab the win.

The last day of the race features 22 miles and about 5,000 feet of gain. A pack of five, including Puzey, battled it out along the grueling course.

“We began to climb. Soon it was down to five of us: Caleb leading the charge, Drew, Laney, Ghelfi, and myself,” said Puzey.  “We moved resolutely, but with a sense of calm. In an instant the mood changed. It was on. We descended quickly from the mountain and wove through downtown…the pace was well under 6 minutes.”

Hitting the last aid station, Puzey made a bold move and instead of filling up on fluids, decided to save time and run the last five miles dry. Though he grabbed the lead, these five miles proved to be brutal with steep climbs, tired legs and four competitors on his heels. Steadily, he increased the gap between him and the pack to take the win.

Just last year, Thomas and his brother Jacob, ran the TransRockies Run as a team. The duo, both elite athletes for Altra, took second place with a time of 19:14:44. Their adventure was made into a documentary called “Brothers” shot on location by Paul Nelson during the 2015 race. The film highlights their time together during the six stages while telling of a lifetime of shared running experiences. “Brothers” premiered at the 2016 TransRockies Run and will be privately shown across North America.

The TransRockies Run is a six-day, point-to-point, trail running race from Buena Vista, CO to Beaver Creek, CO. The race is 120 miles long with 20,000 feet of elevation gain. Limited to only 350 participants, this tough course features six stages, one for each day, of varying miles and elevations. After each stage, the athletes congregate together to set up camp, eat, relax and prepare for the next day’s race. This year was the 10th anniversary of the event that claims to give you “A Lifetime of Memories”.

Puzey took first in the Altra Paradigm 2.0, a maximum cushioned shoe, ideal for running ultramarathons.

About

Growing up in Colorado you can't help but love the outdoors. Something magical happens with 300 days of sunshine and the Rocky Mountains in your back yard. My athletic endeavors started on the bike, I would get out and ride whenever I could. In 2011 I moved to Oxford, England for work. I missed the sunshine and mountains, but discovered my passion for running. When I moved back to Colorado I started combining cycling and running, so it was only natural that I started competing in triathlons. I took second place at my first sprint, and caught the bug. Today I'm training for my fourth Ironman.
