Newton Running Athletes Timothy O’Donnell and Tim Van Berkel to race in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

Newton Running athletes Timothy O’Donnell and Tim Van Berkel will toe the start line in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii at the long-distance triathlon championships on Saturday, October 8, 2016.

With a third place finish in 2015 and a fifth place finish in 2013 in Kona, Timothy O’Donnell has his eyes set on a return to the podium in 2016. O’Donnell is a long-distance triathlon champion and a 10-time half-distance triathlon champion. He was named Triathlete of the Year by USA Triathlon in both 2009 and 2010. Living and training in Boulder, Colorado, O’Donnell is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and one of the top long-distance American triathletes. Australian Tim Van Berkel is the youngest 3-time long-distance triathlon champion. Van Berkel grew up playing Australian Rules football (AFL) and took up triathlon with his teammates at the age of 18 as a way of staying fit in the off-season. Van Berkel developed as a triathlete before tackling Kona for the first time in 2014, where he finished 7^th. Van Berkel heads into Kona this year with several 2016 podiums including a win in Cairns, Queensland, Australia in June.
