July 19, 2016, Boston, MA — 2015 North American Ironman Champion Angela Naeth has confirmed that she will race 2016 Columbia Threadneedle Boston Triathlon. The 8th annual event takes place on Sunday, July 31, 2016 at DCR Carson Beach in South Boston.
In addition to winning the 2015 North American Ironman Championship, Naeth is an 11 time 70.3 Ironman champion, 25+ 70.3 podium finishes and 2-time Ironman Champion, where both victories were under 9-hours. In Boston, Naeth will be competing in the first-ever Olympic Distance Triathlon, an addition to this year’s event. Naeth and other athletes will compete for an increased total prize purse of $3, 000.
“We are thrilled to have Angela compete in the first-ever Olympic Distance race at the Columbia Threadneedle Boston Triathlon,” said Michael O’Neil, Event Director. “By adding an Olympic Distance option to this year’s competition, we have attracted one of the top athletes in the world. This is very exciting for the triathlon community in Boston.”
The Columbia Threadneedle Boston Triathlon is a USAT sanctioned race. The looped course combines a swim at DCR Carson Beach, a bike ride on DCR Day Boulevard, and a run in beautiful South Boston near the waterfront of Pleasure Bay. There will be three races on July 31st: an Olympic race, a Sprint race and the inaugural Kids Splash and Dash. Athletes can compete individually or as part of a team.
Following these races, competitors can celebrate with family and friends at the post-race awards ceremony and party, sponsored by Michelob Ultra.
The inaugural Kids Splash and Dash is open to kids ages 7-15. Broken up into four different age groups, kids 7-8 and 9-10 will compete in a 100-yard swim followed by a 1K run. Kids 11-12 and 13-15 will compete in a 200-yard swim followed by a 2K run. The Kids Splash and Dash will begin at 12 noon.
Building on Columbia Threadneedle Boston Triathlon’s long-standing commitment to the community, all competitors will have the opportunity to raise money for the new Adolescent and Young Adult Substance Use Disorder Treatment Program at Boston Medical Center (BMC), a 496-bed Level I trauma center and the largest safety-net hospital in New England. BMC’s new treatment program will be a regional referral center for youth under 24 years old and will provide care and treatment plans for young patients who have developed substance use disorders, as well as those who have experimented and may be at risk for developing an addiction.
