PORTLAND, Ore. (September 8, 2016) — Portland based athletic apparel company, Greenlayer, is privileged to announce that it will provide the official race tee for the 38th year of the IRONMAN® World Championship triathlon. This will be the first time in the history of the event, that the IRONMAN World Championship finisher shirts will be made from a propriety blend of plant based materials and recycled polyester.
The recycled polyester construction is made from recycled plastic bottles that are melted down to produce yarns that are then used to create the fabric. This process reduces the energy consumption in the manufacturing process compared to virgin polyester along with offsetting waste from going into landfills. With the release of the shirts made from recycled polyester and plant based fibers, Greenlayer is growing its sustainable product lines, not just because of the environmental benefits, but because this is the forefront and direction of the apparel and textile industry in the years to come.

Since 1978, IRONMAN has hosted the World Championship event in Hawai`i. On October 8th 2016, over 2,000 athletes will begin their 140.6-mile journey consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and 26.2 mile run, all the while taking in the breathtaking black rock lava fields of the Kona Coast.
