Fourth annual Trek CXC Cup brings amateur bicycle racing and top professionals to Waterloo, Wisconsin

WATERLOO, WISC. (Sept. 1, 2016) – One of the most popular bicycle events in the state returns to Waterloo on September 17 and 18, the fourth annual Trek CXC Cup. This event brings together hundreds of cyclists racing across grass, dirt, gravel, pavement, and a series of obstacles, as part of the national Pro Cyclocross Calendar (Pro CX). Mix in spectators ringing cowbells and enjoying refreshments in the Festival Area and Trek Fun Zone, and you have a weekend of fun for the entire family.

The Trek CXC Cup will be held on the grounds of Trek Bicycle’s global headquarters in Waterloo, which is located 20 minutes from Madison and less than an hour from Milwaukee. There will be 36 cyclo-cross races on Saturday and 34 races on Sunday.

The Trek CXC Cup is sanctioned by USA Cycling and the UCI, (the international governing body of cycling), as the second of eight Pro CX events in the country for 2016-17. Equal prize money is offered for men and women in the elite and professional categories both days, with professional athletes earning points for Pro CX. There are also races offered for juniors, masters, and single-speed bicycles.

New participants can think of cyclo-cross as steeplechase on a bicycle, held on spectator-friendly courses. The event is free for all spectators and is held rain or shine. Family-oriented activities for all ages will be held at the Festival Area and Trek Fun Zone, located at 801 W. Madison St., Waterloo. Amateur racing starts at 8 a.m. each day with the elite women’s and men’s races beginning at noon and 1:15 p.m. Amateur racing will resume later in the afternoon.

“We redesigned the course last year with a flyover, a new elite racer-only hill climb, and this year added a new elite downhill along with fun sections in the woods for all the racers.  This improved race course offers interesting challenges for all levels of competitors, has great spots for spectators, and showcases Trek’s commitment to cyclo-cross,” said race director Renee Callaway, a former elite cyclist who is a transportation planner for the City of Madison.

“For racers, we are proud to offer equal pay for both the elite men’s and women’s fields. For spectators, we are proud to offer an incredible two-day party on the grounds of Trek’s headquarters, including a junior girl’s clinic and kid’s races,” she added.

A Junior Girl’s Clinic will be led by 24-year-old Racine-native Kaitlin Antonneau, who won the under-23 cyclo-cross national title as an 18 year old and was the bronze medalist last year at the U.S. elite women’s cyclo-cross championship. This free clinic teaches the basics of ‘cross riding to girls, ages nine to 18. A waiver must be signed by a parent or guardian (for girls under 16) and each participant must bring a bicycle and a helmet. Check in for the clinic will be at the atrium just inside Trek headquarters.
