DelMoSports, Atlantic City Sports Commission, Race2Rebuild to Partner for Jersey Shore Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Project

Atlantic City, NJ (August 10, 2016) – Race2Rebuild, the nonprofit endurance sports program supporting disaster recovery is headed back home to the Jersey Shore to support continued recovery from Hurricane Sandy and race the DelMoSports Atlantic City Triathlon and 5K. With funding raised by athletes and support from the Atlantic City Sports Commission, athletes and volunteers will help rebuild Sandy-damaged homes with national nonprofit partners SBP and A Future with Hope, on Saturday, August 13. On Sunday, August 14, they will race the DelMoSports Atlantic City Triathlon and 5K in Atlantic City, NJ. The event offers a Sprint and International distance triathlon for individuals and relay teams and a new 5K race that benefits Race2Rebuild’s Jersey Shore initiative.

The Atlantic City Sports Commission has a history of successfully partnering with DelMoSports, and this year they join forces with Race2Rebuild to support continued Sandy rebuilding in New Jersey where Race2Rebuild has helped further multiple rebuilding projects since its inception in 2012.

“This will be the Atlantic City Sports Commission’s second year in a row working with DelMoSports,” said Jim Wood, President and CEO of Meet AC. “This event has helped provide the opportunity to continue flood recovery efforts after the devastation of Sandy and the economic impact typically brings around $750,000 to the area. With the Race2Rebuild partnership, the community impact will be immeasurable. We’re so thankful to have the opportunity to work with these amazing organizations!”

“We are so very excited to partner with Race2Rebuild as our charity for our Atlantic City Triathlon and 5K,” said Stephen Del Monte, Founder and CEO of DelMoSports. “We are dedicated to helping the Jersey Shore community, and joining forces again with Race2Rebuild gives us the opportunity to aid families that are still recovering from Sandy.”

Volunteers of all skill levels will assist with multiple flood recovery projects in Monmouth County and Atlantic County in an effort to support continued relief from Hurricane Sandy, nearly four years after the disaster devastated much of New Jersey, displacing thousands of families and causing widespread damage to homes and business.

“A community’s recovery process following a disaster is the ultimate endurance event,” said Race2Rebuild President Sarah Hartmann. “We are truly grateful to our partners the Atlantic City Sport Commission and DelMoSports, and especially our rebuilding partners SBP and A Future with Hope for their ongoing work and for providing Race2Rebuild volunteers with the opportunity to tangibly change lives, sending a message to all families struggling to come home that they are not forgotten.”

SBP’s Co-Founder and CEO, Zack Rosenburg commented, “Nearly four years after Sandy, much work remains to be done in New Jersey and New York. Four years is far too long for families and homeowners to be displaced. SBP’s mission is to shrink time between disaster and recovery so that our fellow citizens are not subjected to the unnecessary suffering brought on by a prolonged recovery. We are grateful for our longstanding relationship with Race2Rebuild and the athlete volunteers who donate their time and energy to help return a sense of normalcy to SBP’s clients in New Jersey and beyond.”

“Four years after Sandy, the recovery effort has become complex for many home owners,” said Bobbie Ridgely, Executive Director of A Future With Hope, “People are struggling with government resources, fraudulent contractors and delayed insurance payouts.  Their options are narrowing.  A Future With Hope and United Methodists are committed to being a place where they can turn for help.”

Athletes and volunteers who wish to participate in the Race2Rebuild Jersey Shore rebuilding projects may sign up online before August 13th. Rebuilding volunteers receive safety training, event shirt, nutrition and hydration. Lunch will be provided by Whole Foods Market. Athletes are encouraged to join the Race2Rebuild New Jersey fundraising campaign on CrowdRise. Prizes will be awarded to top fundraisers on race day from Race2Rebuild sponsors XRCEL, Champion System, blueseventy, Road ID, TIMEX Sports and more. Register to volunteer, race and support the project with a donation at http://ift.tt/1VUAqM2.

About SBP

SBP’s mission is to shrink time between disaster and recovery. Since its founding in 2006 in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana following the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, SBP has rebuilt homes for more than 1,120 families nationally with the help of over 125,000 volunteers across six states: New Orleans, LA; Joplin, MO; Staten Island, NY; Rockaway, NY; Monmouth and Ocean Counties, NJ; San Marcos, TX and Columbia, SC. SBP’s model is enhanced by AmeriCorps, which provides 140 members annually to manage worksites and clients, and train the organization’s volunteers nationally.

Through its Disaster Resilience and Recovery Lab, SBP works to share lessons learned, prevent common barriers to recovery and help communities utilize SBP’s standardized, repeatable and proven-effective model.

SBP shrinks time between disaster and recovery via five interventions:

  1. Build innovatively, driving efficiency
  2. Share SBP’s proven effective model with other organizations to increase efficacy across the disaster rebuilding sector
  3. Train home and business owners in resilience and risk mitigation prior to disaster
  4. Advise local and state government officials so they can deploy federal dollars sooner, and in a way that empowers an efficient recovery
  5. Advocate so that what is measured is what matters – a complete recovery

About

Growing up in Colorado you can't help but love the outdoors. Something magical happens with 300 days of sunshine and the Rocky Mountains in your back yard. My athletic endeavors started on the bike, I would get out and ride whenever I could. In 2011 I moved to Oxford, England for work. I missed the sunshine and mountains, but discovered my passion for running. When I moved back to Colorado I started combining cycling and running, so it was only natural that I started competing in triathlons. I took second place at my first sprint, and caught the bug. Today I'm training for my fourth Ironman.
