Burrett, Bickley Take Cash Prizes at Kelowna Wine Country Half Marathon

September 5, 2016—Kelowna, BC— The 4th running of the Kelowna Wine Country Half Marathon offered runners ideal running conditions and a scenic journey though wine country in the Okanagan Valley.  Local athlete Brad Bickley proved to be the fastest from the start at The Vibrant Vine winery to the finish line in Waterfront Park, completing the picturesque course in 1:11:13, bettering his 3rd place finish from the previous year by 30 seconds.  Finishing in second place finisher was 40 year-old Scott Jensen from Calgary.  Chad Portwood, from Oroville, WA took third place with a time of 1:16:15.

Erin Burrett defended her title with a time of 1:16:36, just a few seconds off the course record she set in 2015. Burrett, from Nanaimo, BC, finished fourth overall.  Malindi Elmore, a 2004 Olympian from Kelowna, finished second with a time of 1:19:26, and Allison Blackmore, 40, from Calgary, Alberta, ran a 1:23:53 to finish in 3rd place.  “I didn’t have my best run today but I really enjoy this course and the long weekend getaway to Kelowna”, said Burrett.  “I’ll look forward to coming back next year and aiming for the course record.”

The picturesque 21.1 kilometer course offers runners views of Lake Okanagan and the finish area below from The Vibrant Vine winery, on Kelowna’s east bench.  After crossing the finish line on the promenade in front of the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort, runners and their guests were treated to a festive post-race Wine & Music Festival.  The festival features wine, beer and cider tasting from local producers, live music and the awards ceremony, where top three finishers in their age group are awarded a bottle of wine.  Burrett and Bickley each received $500 cash, a Fortessa plate trophy, and double magnum of wine for their wins.
