10 Major Companies to Sponsor North Carolina’s Premier Road Race – Raleigh’s City of Oaks Marathon

Raleigh, N.C., September 13, 2016 – Ten of the Triangle’s largest companies, who collectively employ more than 15,000 people locally, have signed on as major sponsors of Raleigh’s City of Oaks Marathon.  Over 5,000 runners are expected to participate in the event’s 10th anniversary on November 6th, 2016, representing a 25% participation increase over the 2015 event.  The ten major sponsors include: Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, LexisNexis, UNC Rex Healthcare, News and Observer, Red Hat, Duke Raleigh Hospital, Leith Volkswagen, CPI Security, Michelob Ultra, and Delta Airlines.

“Delta is committed to making a true difference in the communities where we live and serve each day,” said Jake Abel, General Manager-Marketing, Delta Air Lines. “We are proud to engage with the Raleigh-Durham area in the air, on the ground, and through events like City of Oaks Marathon.  Delta proudly supports the marathon’s charitable work, strong ties to local organizations, commitment to diversity, and mission to provide a premier racing environment.”

Nine different business sectors are represented by the ten major sponsors, each with different objectives for their Sponsorship.  Despite varying goals, each sponsor shares an awareness that their businesses, and Raleigh as a whole, can benefit from investing in premier, local events that contribute to quality of life for current Raleigh residents and showcase the city to its visitors.

“The pace at which we are hiring talented, highly educated individuals cannot be satisfied through traditional recruiting methods alone,” said Michael Lipps, CEO and Managing Director of the LexisNexis Software Division.   “Sponsoring City of Oaks raises brand awareness, offers a health and wellness opportunity for current employees, and provides a platform to engage with thousands of highly educated, driven, prospective employees in a positive and memorable environment.”

Race 13.1, a Raleigh-based Event Management Company, acquired the City of Oaks Marathon in February.  Under Race 13.1 ownership, City of Oaks will remain a stand-alone event with the same local character it has developed over the last nine years, while significant investments are being made to ensure that the runner experience is second to none.

“Rated the 4th best City to live by US News, the 9th fastest growing city by Forbes, and the 19th best Running City in America by Runner’s World, Raleigh has all the intrinsic characteristics necessary to host a nationally renowned marathon event,” said John Kane, Founder and CEO of Race 13.1.  “These characteristics, the strong support of Raleigh’s largest stakeholders and our commitment to continue investing in the race will enable the City of Oaks Marathon to become a nationally renowned event that that is a source of great pride and economic benefit for Raleigh.”

Two of the major additions for 2016 include the new and improved two-day Duke Raleigh Hospital Health & Fitness Expo featuring more than 50 health oriented companies and the LexisNexis Post-Race Party with a live performance from Liquid Pleasure, a food truck rodeo, and two free beers for everyone of legal drinking age.  The Expo and Post-Race party are free and open to the public.

“Duke Raleigh Hospital is committed to improving the health of Wake County. Supporting and participating in local events like the City of Oaks Health & Fitness Expo enables us to help connect people within our community seeking to start and maintain healthy lifestyles with the many local organizations that can help them do it,” said David Zaas, President of Duke Raleigh Hospital.

About

Growing up in Colorado you can't help but love the outdoors. Something magical happens with 300 days of sunshine and the Rocky Mountains in your back yard. My athletic endeavors started on the bike, I would get out and ride whenever I could. In 2011 I moved to Oxford, England for work. I missed the sunshine and mountains, but discovered my passion for running. When I moved back to Colorado I started combining cycling and running, so it was only natural that I started competing in triathlons. I took second place at my first sprint, and caught the bug. Today I'm training for my fourth Ironman.
